Terms of use

Terms of use and community rules.

The rules for using the One for Nature app and this website. One for Nature works because the records are real and people can trust them.

Using One for Nature

One for Nature is free. Anyone can look at the map and the records. To post, start or sign a petition, or report something, you need an account, and you must be 16 or over. Keep your login to yourself — you are responsible for what is posted from your account.

By creating an account or using the app you agree to these terms, the community rules below, and our privacy policy.

Community rules

By using the app you agree to these rules. There’s no tolerance for objectionable content or abusive members.

  1. Record what’s really there. Post your own photos and videos of what you saw, where you saw it. No staged, edited or borrowed images, and no guessing at locations.
  2. Report the problem, not the person. Show the damage or the risk. Don’t name, shame, threaten or harass anyone — landowners, workers, councils or other members.
  3. Keep people’s privacy. Avoid faces, number plates, home addresses and anyone’s personal details. Never post someone else’s contact information.
  4. Stay safe and stay legal. Don’t trespass, put yourself or wildlife at risk, or disturb nesting sites to get a shot.
  5. No hate, no spam. No abusive, hateful, sexual or violent content, and no advertising or off-topic posts.

What happens when something breaks the rules

Anyone can report a post or a person from its “…” menu, and block someone to stop seeing their posts. Moderators review reports within 24 hours. Posts that break the rules are removed, and members who break them are suspended. If several people report a post, it’s hidden until a moderator has checked it.

What you post

You keep ownership of the photos, videos and words you post. By posting them you give One for Nature a free, worldwide, non-exclusive licence to show them in the app, on the map, on share links and on this website, to share them with councils, agencies and journalists as part of the work, and to keep them as part of the public record while they remain posted.

Only post material you took yourself or have the right to post. You can delete any of your posts at any time from its “…” menu.

Accuracy, and being fair to people

Records are evidence, and evidence has consequences. When you post, you must:

  • Describe what you saw, not what you have concluded from it.
  • Not state as fact something you have not checked — particularly who owns land, who caused something, or whether a rule has been broken.
  • Not post anything you know to be false or misleading.

Under New Zealand law you can be personally responsible for statements that damage someone’s reputation, even when you post them here. You are responsible for what you write.

Things you must not do

  • Break the community rules above, or the law.
  • Post material that infringes anyone’s copyright, privacy or other rights.
  • Pretend to be someone else, or create accounts to get around a suspension.
  • Interfere with the service, or try to get into other people’s accounts.
  • Scrape or bulk-copy the records for a commercial product without asking us first.

Moderation

We can hide, edit or remove any post or petition, and suspend or close any account, where we think these terms have been broken, or a record is inaccurate, unsafe or unfair. We will usually tell you why.

If a record concerns you or land you are responsible for, report it from the “…” menu in the app or contact us with the details. We would rather correct the record than defend a wrong one.

Taking action

“Take action” writes an email for you to send, from your own email app, to the council or agency that handles the issue. You choose whether to send it and you are the sender. We can’t guarantee how, or whether, anyone responds.

Closing your account

You can delete your account at any time in the app: Me → Account and privacy → Delete my account. This deletes your posts, photos and videos, petitions, signatures and reports. More about deleting your account.

No guarantees

The service is provided as it is. Records come from members of the public and we don’t check every one. Don’t rely on a record as a formal survey, a legal boundary or professional advice. We may change, pause or stop parts of the service.

Liability

As far as the law allows, we are not liable for any loss arising from your use of the service. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under the Consumer Guarantees Act 1993 or the Fair Trading Act 1986 where they apply.

Changes

We may update these terms. If a change matters, we will update the date at the top and let you know in the app.

Law

These terms are governed by New Zealand law, and the New Zealand courts have jurisdiction.
