About

We love this country and we want it looked after.

One for Nature exists because the people who notice things happening on the land usually have nowhere useful to put what they saw.

What we are protecting

Aotearoa New Zealand’s natural capital: freshwater, forests, soil, oceans, estuaries, wetlands, biodiversity and air. Not as an abstraction — as the specific river you grew up swimming in, and the specific hillside that has started moving.

One for Nature documents ongoing changes to that environment, centralises the data and the visual evidence, exposes greenwashing, and grows a community of contributors who can hold agencies and corporations to account. We also show contributors how to engage with agencies and media to actually get that accountability — better outcomes, and in time, stronger institutions.

Why us

Wins, losses, and what we learned from both.

Our team has had victories and setbacks campaigning for New Zealand’s environment. Along the way we have connected with people who share the same concern for this country’s natural beauty and the same alarm at what is coming for it. We have picked up hard-won insight into what works, and into how governance and influence actually operate.

Now we are sharing what we know openly, and learning from everyone else. One for Nature is the place that exchange happens.

How we operate

  • Independent. Not aligned to any political party, and free of political entanglement. The mission outlasts any government or minister.
  • Practical. We favour solutions that can actually be executed and conversations that are honest about trade-offs.
  • Open. The map is public and the record is public. Evidence that only a few people can see is not much use to anyone.
  • For everyone. Farmers, trampers, scientists, iwi, fishers, councillors. If you care what happens to this place, you belong here.
What people say

Backed by people who have spent years on this.

“One for nature is a win for the mostly ignored public out in nature. This is the core of citizen science giving individuals the opportunity to get some power back to begin to balance the huge influence big business has in destroying the ecosystems we all depend on.”
Dr Mike Joy
“Despite the excellent performance of some individuals, our public institutions are going backwards on environmental issues. After years of campaigning I’ve realised visual evidence is HUGE for creating public awareness, holding our leaders accountable and getting major improvements. One for Nature is a tool everyone can use to amplify positive change.”
Geoff Reid
“I can see what’s going wrong and I want to help. I have things to offer and I want to join up with people that want to see our institutions doing a better job and be held accountable. One for Nature is hub to create positive action.”
Angus Robson
